Plants of the month
Euphorbia Characias subsp.wulfenii
With over 2000 Euphorbia species to choose from every garden needs an Euphorbia or two.
This one has grey green leaves and large globe shaped head of small yellow green flowers from early spring growing up to 1.2m. Good for back of borders providing a bold structure and contrast.They need sun and well drained soil. Flower heads remain throughout the summer. Prune out old stems in autumn. Exudes irritant white sap when cut so wear cloves. Plant with ornamental grasses,geraniums, Phormiums.
Other Euphorbias' we like : E.Griffithii dark green leaves with red veins, in early summer produces orange/red flower heads. Likes richer soil with light shade to 75cm.
E.amygdaloides var.robbiae excellent evergreen ground cover for dry shade. Early spring flowers to 30cm.
Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom'
Vigorous evergreen climber with dark glossy leaves. Flowers early spring with a profusion of pink tinged white scented flowers. Plant in a sunny position, South or West facing in fertile soil. To 5m so give it a large wall or tree to clamber up. Good for hiding unsightly objects. Prune after flowering.
Magnolia x soulangeana
One of the sights of spring, large goblet shaped white/rose-pink flowers emerging from furry buds before the bright green leaves. With its classical good looks and delicate scent every garden should have a magnolia. Give it space to grow and show it off to its' best, up to 6m when mature, full sun / part shade. Plant with spring bulbs, hellebores, Prune if necessary in mid summer.
Other varieties M.'Stellata'- star shaped white flowers up to 3.5m slow growing perfect for small gardens. Similar sized M. x loebneri pale pink / purple flowers slightly later than 'Stellata'
